But I don’t see how outlawing contraceptives (and presumably abortion too) solves any problems.

All our social ills are interrelated. The high abortion rate is directly tied to the high poverty rate. One of the main reasons people have abortions is because they can’t financially take care of a child.

If we outlaw contraceptives but don’t make a real transformation in people’s lives, the number of kids born to parents who can’t afford them will increase and the poverty rate will worsen. But if we work at personal rather than political transformation, we’d solve many of our social problems at once.

The scary statistic is exactly what that data shows, that when contraceptives fail, abortion is the alternative. Roll back to pre-Griswold v Connecticut to re-outlaw contraceptives and that sad, but obvious consequence, wouldn’t be an option.

But those of us who on occasion prayerfully protest at abortion clinics hope for individuals to overcome their fear and care little about the statistics. 1 lamb in 100 will do nicely.

And others just enjoy moral outrage (an easy trap to slip into, I’ve found).
